Course Description
This course provides an overview of the science of reading, systematic phonics instruction, and the essential components of early literacy instruction at the elementary level (grades K-8). Includes developmentally appropriate instructional delivery, facilitation, and methodologies for teaching English Language Arts including phonemic awareness, vocabulary and oral language, phonics and decoding, oral reading fluency, reading comprehension, and writing. The course emphasizes instructional design and lesson planning, including modifications and accommodations for intensifying instruction. Topics of discussion include various assessment tools to analyze miscues, diagnose learner needs, differentiate instruction, monitor learner response, and use data to report student progress. The course also includes interdisciplinary strategies of instruction for making connections with other content areas. Note: The course is approved by ADE for part A of the K-5 Literacy Endorsement on the state Teaching Certificate.
